TREKKING IN SANGLA VALLEY





SANGLA VALLEY TREK

There is regular bus service between karchham and sangla 2680mts. The road winds its way through a narrow valley and round precipitious bends to arrive at sangla, a fairy large village with a forest rest house the old fort of kamru is situated a few kms north of sangla.

The village of rakcham 2900mts is approached after a level walk of 8kms through dense forests, rakcham to chitkul 3450mts is a gradual climb of 18kms via mastrang. Now chitkul is connected by a motorable road with sangla. There is a forest rest house at chitkul. The region beyond chitkul is a land of rock , snow and glaciers . the trail this route lies in prohibited area from chitkul continues to surthi, turns north – east and crosses yumrang pass 5510mts into Tibet. This also was an old trade route, though not as important as that of shipki –la.

Best period ; may, june and august end to October 15th





 karchham – sangla via shibaling pass 31’ 24 n, 78 ‘ 13 e .

This is an easy trek of 4 to 5 days, which takes you through the beautiful countryside of baspa valley. The trail from karchham climbs steeply towards the south for 8kms to reach sapni village.  A temple dedicated to the snakes god is situated here. The surroundings of sapni are heavily wooded. Next day the trail  to barua passes through apple orchards and involves many ups and downs. Situated 8kms from sapni, it also has a temple in the centre of the village. From barua, the path decends for 2kms to the barua nala and , after crossing it by a small bridge, goes up and down for another 8kms. From there it is a steep climb  to chasu village 3100mts.

From chasu to dumar 3800mts is a continuous ascent of 5kms through birch forests. Dumar is a camping ground where shepherds graze their sheeps and have built a few temporary shelters. Shibaling pass 3980mts  is a continuous but gradual climb of 3kms from dumar. From the pass one can enjoy a vista of snow peaks all around. The trail then discends for 6kms to reach sangla kanda. One can bypass sangla kanda and continue to sangla, which is 7kms further on from sangla kanda.





 Sangla – harsil trek via  lamkhaga pass 5284mts

From sangla the trail is the same as that for the baspa valley trek as far as surthi. From there the  trail for lamkhaga pass turns south and after a strenuous trek of about 14kms, reaches the pass. The last stretch up to the pass is very steep. After that the trail follows the jalandhri gad down to harsil road – head, near gangotri. One can also cross over another 5151mts high pass located to the east of lamkhaga pass.





 Morang –chitkul trek via charang pass 5266mts

This is a medium trek of 7 to 8 days that follows the north and east sides of the kinner kailash  and phawarang  massifs. The trail passes through the  tirung gad valley and crosses  charang pass to reach chitkul in baspa valley.

The trail starts from morang, ehich can be reached by bus from kalpa. There is a provision store and rest house at morang. The  trail follows  the left bank of the Sutlej river, for a short way until confluence with tirung gad. From there the trail turns south –east and after going through a narrow valley, comes to thangi. The journey from morang to thangi can be done also by jeep. Thangi is a small village where mules can be hired for the trek.

The path leaves thangi and passes through barren mountainscape until it reaches rahtak camping ground. From there the track turns towards the south  -west and climbs steeply to charang pass 5266mts . after descending alongside the rock- strewn stream on the other side, the trail terminates at chitkul in baspa valley. From chitkul to karchham is  the same as described in the baspa valley trek.



 

 Rupa valley – spiti valley trek

This is 7 to 8 days trek  which starts from shi asu 31’43 n , 78 ‘ 32 e situated on the Hindustan – Tibet road; the village can be reached by bus from kalpa . at shi asu there are a few eating shops, a provision store and a pwd rest house.

Best period ;- august 1 to September 30

The track from shi asu to sangnam heads n.w.  and is a  gradual climb of 9kms . sangnam is a large village with a  few shops and a temple. From there to ropa 2925 mts is another gradual ascent of 6kms through apricot orchards. This is the last village on this route. Essential provisions and kerosene oil is  available here. The trail continues up along the ropa gad  crosses a stream before rangbar camping ground about 14kms from ropa village. From rangbar, it is a stiff climb of about 4kms to get to panktil 4010 mts , which stands high up overlooking the confluence of the ropa gad and the chuktanjan gad flowing down from n.w. a few shepherds’ huts are also located there. From panktil the trail follows the shepherds’ track northwards, dropping gradually along the  course of the ropa gad to reach sumdo thatch 3660,mts; this is a beautiful meadow over looked by the peaks of manirang 6593mts and singikang

The trail then leaves the ropa gad and climbs steeply for 300mts on to a rocky ridge, which it traverses; then it descends to the pamchung camping ground 3960mts. A big overhang can  be seen between sumdo thatch and pamchung; it is customary camping site for shepherds during the journey.

The next stage from pamchung to rankali 4420mts is again a stiff climb of about 4kms. Rankali is at the foot of the manirang pass, and from there the trail continues through the centre of a gully . the climb to the manirang pass 5600mts is long and gradual  and takes about 8hrs. the manirang peak 6593mts stands to the north – east of the pass. From the pass the trail drops steeply to sapona in spiti valley, then goes on to mane village, situated on the right bank of the spiti river.

A few kms beyond, the trail crosses the spiti river over a bridge between sichling and puh and meets the main road for manali  and Shimla. From there one can  take a bus either for manali over the kunzam and rothang passes or for  Shimla via wangtu and Rampur.



 

 

KINNER KAILASH PARIKARAMA  CIRCUIT

 TREK

The following 3 routes are used by the devotees for the kailash parikarama. So the exact heights and distances of stages are different. The kinner kailash has religious significance for a huge ‘ rock lingam ‘ of kailashpati mahadev. The circuit  around the whole range attracts many pilgrims every year. The parikarama begins from kalpa via tirung valley and back to kalpa via sangla valley. There is a road upto thangi and the actual trekking begins from here.


    1stday: – kalpa – thangi 2966mts ………50kms

2nd day:- thangi – lambar 2896 mts ………12kms

Slightly going down.

3rd day:- lambar – charang 3506mts ……..12kms

The trek is through different terrain.

4th day:- charang  - chitkul  3450 mts …..14kms

5th day:- chitkul  - rakchham 2900mts  ……..12kms

SARAHAN – WANGTU TREK

This is an easy  and pleasant trek of 4 to 5 days along the old Hindustan – Tibet road. According to mrs. Penelope chetwode,  it is one of the most beautiful walks in the world ; from sarahan  the trail leads through the typical villages of sungra and nechar where a few ancient temples are located. There are several rest  houses along the route, some dating back to 1890; they have been providing shelter to travellers and eplorers on their way to Tibet during all these years. One of the main attractions of this trail is the local colour and the traditional way of life of the inhabitants.

Best period ; april to june and august 15 to October 15th

1st day ;- sarahan 1920,mts – chora 1638,mts …..16kms

The trail follows the metalled road down to jeori for about 1kms. After a sharp bend in the road, the trail branches off to the right and continues north –east  along the Hindustan – Tibet road. The path leads through forests of pine, horse –chestnut, oak and rhododendron. The trail is fairly level to start with but after a few kilometres it descends and crosses two streams; it continues down gently to the chora forest rest house. An ancient temple of hirma devi is located 300mts below the rest house.

2nd day ;- chora – tranda 1800mts ……8kms

Again , this path is a fairly level walk for the first 6kms after which it climbs steeply for 2kms to reach the forest rest house of tranda, situated on the top of a ridge.

3rd day ;- tranda – paunda 1830mts ……….10kms

This is a pleasant walk through thick pine forests.the trail goes along the edge of a precipice as far as solding nala, which is crossed by a bridge. The trail then crosses another stream before climbing gradually to meet a metalled road that links the new Hindustan – Tibet road with the villages of sungra and nechar. The p.w.d. rest house at paunda was built in 1890.

4th day ;- paunda – nechar 1950mts……12kms

Nechar is an easy walk of 12kms the paunda rest house. After 3kms , one comes to the ancient temple of sungra, which is built in pagoda style and stands amidst dense pine forests. The rest house at nechar is 6kms further on . the villages and temple of nechar are situated 3kms beyond the rest house. The temple is dedicated to the goddess ukha or usha

5th day ;- nechar – wangtu 1830mts ……5kms

The trail descends from the temple site for about 4hrs to join the new Hindustan – Tibet road at wangtu 31’ 32n, 78’ 01e . from there one  can take a bus and return to Shimla or to sarahan .






WANGTU – PIN PARVATI PASS TREK

AN ADVENTUROUS  and almost unexplored trail

 commences from wangtu,  1830mts, 31’ 32 n, 78’ 01 e ;

 after crossing  shakarof pass 5022mts, and the pin

 parvati pass 5319mts, it reaches kullu.

Best period; august 1 to September 30

The trail heads northwards from chora 31’ 34 n, 77’51 e , about 10kms further down the valley from wangtu, goes down to the Sutlej river, crosses it by a ropeway and climbs up to the village of bara khamba, situated in the rupi valley. From there the path follows the shorang gad along its left bank for a few kms, climbs steeply away from the river and enters a side valley to the north – east;it reaches the secluded village of kumrang. From there onwards the route is very strenuous. It leads over moraines and small glaciers, crosses the high snow covered kamba khango pass and the kalang setal glacier. The trail then climbs up to the shakarof pass 5022mts and descends to the ghurguru camping ground, situated on the south bank of the pin river, ghurguru stands on the main southwards trail coming from kaza. The route from the camping ground to kullu over pin parvati pass is the same as in the kaza – pin parvati trek.

Gramphu

A junction on the manali –leh highway, where a road branches off to go south towards kunzum pass spiti , [67km from manali ].




Koksar 

3140mts, going north from gramphu  along the highway is koksar the  coldest place in lahaul.




Tandi 

At the confluence of the Chandra and bhaga rivers, tandi is just 8kms short of keylong. The monastery of guru ghantal  is located high  above tandi.




Keylong

The district headquarters, kelong[3350mts] is located in the  heart of lahaul. It has been described by an early English traveller as a barbaric jewel ,” a  rough cut emerald in a bronze and sliver setting . the green of its fields, with willows and poplars, planted colour against the bare hills. A number of important gompas are located  in the vicinity  of keylong.




Gondla

On the right bank of the river Chandra the tall imposing structure up on a hill, is also a fortification. 18kms.



 

 

Ardang 

The largest monastery in the area, it ha barrel sized  prayer drums that the monks turn during their perambulations. Paintings ancient weapons, musical instruments and large life –size statues of Buddha are its rich treasures.






Udaipur

 Located in upper lahaul, 59kms from keylong , in the pattan valley, Udaipur is the starting point for a number of exciting treks to chamba –kistwar and padam. It has a rest house and camping sites.




Suraj tal 

One of the high altitude lakes in this area. Suraj tal is 65kms from keylong. This emerald lake is the source of river bhaga.




Bara lacha pass [4,833mts ].

A high pass on the manali-leh road, 73kms from keylong . the Chandra, bhaga and yurian rivers originate here it is a base for treks to Chandra tal lake in spiti.

By bus , palampur is  delightful place in the main kangra valley  surrounded on all sides by tea gardens. Neugal khad is an aweinspiring chasm. There is a tea factory and Tibetan camps at bir. Baijnath is famous for ancient shiva temple.

2ND DAY ;- BIR KHAS – RAJGUNDHA { 2520 MTS ….15KMS}

BIR – BILLING -9KMS ; BILLING – RAJGUNDHA -6KMS.

Billing 2600mts is the venue of the hang gliding competition in kangara valley.

3RD DAY ; RAJGUNDHA – PALCHAK DEOTA  2730MTS -9KMS

Good camping ground. The route is dotted with tea shops – only in season.

1ST DAY ;-  BARA BHANGAL –KUARI GOT SPRING 4063.MTS ……14KMS

Trek follows ravi river and ascends gradually upto kuari got, camp near the spring.

2ND DAY ;- KUARI GOT – PHULAN GOT 4040.MTS …….7KMS

Ascent karu glacier and follow ravi river down to phulan got. This trek route is devoid of any inhabitation except shepherds  who are in the valley from mid – june to early September.

3RD DAY ;- PHULAN GOT – CAMPSITE AT TANTAGIRI GLACIER 4840 .MTS……..6.5KMS

Follow ravi river to tantagiri nullah and ascent to the campsite at the tantagiri glacier, just above subsidiary pass and one can have a view of peaks all  around including indrasan 6220 .mts, deo tibba 6000.mts and hanuman tibba . very tough day.

4TH DAY ;- CAMPSITE OVER MANALI PASS 4877.MTS – RANI SUI 4200.MTS

Very tough but rewarding day. Ups-upto manali pass, then following manaslu nullah, camp on the ridge at rani sui. Very good view of indrasan 6220,mts deo tibba 6000.mts and hanuman tibba.

This place has got a legendary story that one of the queens of local raja gave birth to a son at this height, on the way to bara bhangal and his son later on ruled kullu and upper  kangra for more than 200years.

There are two trekking routes to manali from rani sui.

TREK ROUTE { A}

5TH DAY ;- RANI SUI – LAMA DUGH 3380.MTS …..5KMS

6TH DAY ;- LAMA DUGH –MANALI 2050.MTS ……7KMS

After traversing into flower filled alpine and descending on left through thick deodar forest arrive at dhoongri, the site of hadimba devi temple and then down to manali.

TREK ROUTE { B}

RANI SUI – BHOGI THATCH 2800.MTS  -KALATH – MANALI

5TH DAY ;- RANI SUI – BHOGI THATCH 2800.MTS ……6KMS

Beautiful grazing ground of the  alpine SCENERYand one can have the glimpse of whole kullu valley from this place.

6TH DAY ;- BHOGI THATCH – KALATH 1800.MTS……12KMS

Kalath is situated on kullu- manali national highway on the right bank of river beas . this is an insignificant hemlet with few houses and shops and 8kms down  manali. There is one hot –water spring, the water is little sour, has temperature of 104 f. from kalath one can drive to manali the same day.

Trek follows ravi river and ascends gradually upto kuari got. Camp near the spring.

From here the vegetation is similar to that of lahaul valley, for another two days.

4TH DAY ;- CAMPSITE – BEAS KUND 3540.MTS …..5KMS

A strenuous day oer ice gully and moraine. The pass is heavily glaciated. From here one can see into both the valleys of kullu and bara bhangal. A good view of hanuman tibba.beas kund is a lovely alpine plateau, on one side of which is a small holy lake in which rishi vyas used to bathe.

5TH DAY ;- BEAS KUND – SOLANG NULLAH  2500.MTS ….15KMS

Walk down the beas river over moraine through grassland and finally to the hut in deodar forest at solang nullah.

6TH DAY ;- SOLANG NULLAH – MANALI 2050.MTS …..13KMS

Solang is a most enchanting , glaciated valley which has been mentioned and visited by European trekkers as early as 1870. At this place are located the mountain huts with indoor sleeping capacity for 80 people . the old remnants of once the glaciated lake are clearly visible.

In winter this place is used as nursery ski runs for beginners . the water –mills are  spread throughout the banks of river . walk down to manali village, visit sage manu temple and then to manali.

BARA BHANGAL 2541.MTS – MANALI 2050.MTS

Via tentu pass 4996.mts – beas kund 3540.mts

Dhundi 2840.mts – solang valley 2480.mts

1st day ;- bara bhangal 2541.mts – kuari got spring 4063.mts ……14kms

TREK FOLLOWS RAVI RIVER AND ASCENDS GRADUALLY UPTO KUARI GOT. CAMP NEAR THE SPRING.

2nd day ;- kuari got – balu got 3890.mts …..8kms

From here, the vegetation is similar to that of lahaul valley, for another two days.

3RD DAY ;- BALU GOT – CAMPSITE 4640 -4850.MTS BELOW TENTU PASS 4996.MTS ….8KMS

4TH DAY ;- CAMPSITE – BEAS KUND 3540.MTS ……5KMS

TREK IS ALONG WITH THE BANK OF BEAS RIVER SOLANG NULLAH AND one has to ford one turbulent stream during the approach and hop from boulder to boulder. Finally arrive at solang valley and rest in camps or drive to manali, same day.

Walk through the dense  forests, chances of seeing red bears are bright.

Trek is on the left bank of beas kund nala and immediately after leaving dhundi one crosses seri nullah, over fallen trees bridging the stream and enters gumeri reserved forests, there are good chances to see red bears from close quarters. After passing through the dense and most enchanting forest, one again loses height and crosses mugheri nala. The camping is a typical alpine valley surrounded by thick growth of forest. There are scattered hutments of the shepherds and very beautiful artificial rock climbing area.

 

7TH DAY ;- SHAGARA DUGH 3600.MTS – MARRHI 3380.MTS …..10KMS

One crosses a small pass of about 4000 .mts high and gets in to Sheila geru nullah where one can see remnant pieces of dying glacier and following the route up stream along the alpines, plateau where again  temporary hutments of shepherds are seen. One reaches another pass 3988.mts. from this point one can look into both valleys of  manali – kullu area, rohtang pass, bhrigu lake and shela sar. The trek from this place to marrhi can  either be down hill straight to marrhi or one can go to the  top of shela sar 4200mts and come to marrhi.

However, it is better to have night camp at the point at 3988 mts and net day trek to shela sar and come down to marrhi 3380.mts the  trek upto marrhi is precipitous and through patches of loose soil and over perennial snows.

8TH DAY ;- MARRHI – KOTHI 2500.MTS ……6KMS

From marrhi one looses sudden height from 3380.mts to 2600.mts upto rahalla, in 2kms. At rahalla, there is a beautiful water-fall from here walking along the river beas which plunges into chasm enclosed by precipitous barriers of rock not 20 feet apart and  often almost touching further 100.mts it races through this almost  subterranean passage more than 40.mts in depth and emerges upon a scene of striking beauty, now kothi is reached.

Kothi is situated at 2500mts among the rocky cliffs on one side, dense forest of deodar and pine on the other .it is the last village towards lahaul and has ideally located forest rest house and  nursery. One can visit the village and study social customs and manners.

9TH DAY ;- KOTHI – MANALI …….13KMS

One passes through palchan village near which were the forest saw mills now dismantled. Opposite to this point there are beautiful remnants of pre- historical moraine, many million years old. Also ideal site to study the u-saped glaciated valley and the confluence of beas and solang rivers. About 8kms ahead towards manali there is a glaciated cold water spring, famous for medicinal property under the granite, 40 mts high rocks.

Note ; one can drive 19kms from marrhi to manali the same day.

Bharmaur is a big village, but it still retains, in its ancient temples, the monuments of its one time glory. Legend has it that  the place was called brahmapura after brahmani  devi , the patron goddess of the  budhil valley, whose shrine is  situated a little away  above bharmaur . the temples of bharmaur are grouped together in a distinct compound well known and held high in faith and esteem as the chaurasi or churasi . according to legend, shortly after  the accession of sahil verma, the ruler of brahmapura ,bharmaur eighty-four yogis visited the place. They were greatly pleased with the raja’s piety and hospitality and stayed there for a considerable time, rewarding the raja with the birth of a son as an heir, followed by nine more sons and a daughter. Some of the temples have stone idols and some of brass. The wood work is extremely fine and remarkably impressive in the temple of lakshana devi and it has archaeological value.

WARU MEANS “ DOOR OF HIGH WINDS “ – THIS PASS IS VERY – VERY WINDY. AFTER ROUGH AND VERY STIFF CLIMB FROM SATCHALI, cross over waru pass. A beautiful panoramic of several snow peaks unfolds the vista. This pass is rarely used. Now descend steeply, upto thanetar for overnight camp.

Ascend upto the cave shelter near talang pass for night halt.

To-day also is a tough day for first half, upto the pass then after a steep descent arrive at base camp ii for night halt. Talang pass is dedicated to the local god talang.

Few kilometres are difficult, upto oat , then through forests and freenfields, finally to holi . villages in between are las, oat dagoda,

First few kilometres are easy, then steep rocky and snow patches at some places are to be folded .

3RD DAY ;- KIRTHEN – BASE CAMP I 3250.MTS ….10.KMS

Descent gradually at first along a stream at some places very steep. Route is not clear, it is better to camp before the pass.

Very tough day. Strenuous and risky climb over hard snow and  rocks. After crossing tori pass 4310.mts camp otherside of the pass. From top, pir panjal and mani Mahesh ranges are visible.

Now the trail goes down over ridge along streams, forests at few places. It is sherphards  country. Kutehar is situated near ravi river on holi – bharmaur road.

You may clim upto lam dal for a holy dip ; 4-5 hrs climb and then descent to minkiani got over minkiani pass 4410,mts very tough day

9th day ;- minkiami got – kareri rest house 1980,mts …..22kms

It is down and down all the way, very tiring upto rest house. It is located in most beautiful surroundings , you have ever witnessed on this trek. Your all the fatigue is gone at this site.

 From here another 13kms trek will take to kareri lake 3250mts surrounded by green meadows, oak and pine trees, or proceed directly to dharamsala 1250 – 1550,mts

10th day ;- kareri – dharamsala …….15kms

Going down through bhagsu and mcleodganj arrive at dharamsala – the last stage of the trek.

IT IS  ALMOST 4 HRS TREK PASSING THROUGH DAL LAKE , the site of bhagsunath ancient temple, not far from a small but lovely waterfall, the tank and the spring are considered sacred by the hindus. Here are also found slate quarries. A fair is held during  mani Mahesh chhari yatra, kareri rest house is located in the most beautiful surroundings.

2nd day ;- kareri 1980,mts – kareri lake 3250,mts …..13kms

A gradual climb along kareri. Stream passing  through dense forests will lead to kareri lake, surrounded by green meadows, oak and pine trees. There is nag temple and a stone hut.

3rd day ;- kareri lake 3250,mts –minkiani got 3560,mts ……10kms

Ascending over rocks and snow slopes to the pass, the panoramic view of kangra valley and pir panjal ranges is fascinating . this route is not well defined, hence local guide is a must, now descending with great difficulty to the other side over boulders, takes 7-8 hrs in all to cover 10kms distance. No firewood is available to day, at it is all rocky with snow patches.

4TH DAY ;- MINKIANI GOT 3560.MTS – DRAKUND 2280.MTS ……16KMS

It is all down through forest and stream. You may go to lam dal 4-5 kms climb and have a holy dip and come down to next halt.

5TH  DAY ;- DRAKUND – DONALI 1525 MTS ……18KMS

IT IS VERY EASY WALKING DAY. You may rest here for  a day in the village surrounded by forests.

6th day ;- donali – chamba 996.mts ……drive

From donali, you may drive to bharmaur it is almost 4hrs drive, visit old temples and return the same day to chamba.

1ST DAY CHAMBA – KHAJJIAR 1951 ,M ……18KMS

Known as gulmarg of himachal Pradesh , is a lovely picnic spot pre –eminent among which is the plain of khajjiar . khajjiar lake is shaped like a saucer, this huge bowl of emerald – turfed meadows, 1.6kms long and 0.9 kms broad , lies embedded beneath a dense pine  forest, surrounded by high mountains, and fringed by gigantic deodars. Under the canopy of the blue sky, set in the rolling green turf is a small but picturesque lake, with the added attraction of a floating island. Adding to the charms of khajjiar, with huge a golden – domed devi temple, is golf course set in idyllic surroundings. The golden spire of the devi’s abode beckon’s one to the fringe of the lake. One gets out of the car to go the lake but the ground seems to give way. The earth is ‘ spongy ‘ due to the dense growth of a weed called ‘ vacha’ over which  dust has formed a thick layer of earth. The remarkable island which floats across the lake  is similarly formed by weeds . among the places to stay are h.p. dak bungalow, h.p.p.w.d. rest house, youth hostel and a summer house. From here a 30 kms long foot – path , passing through thick deodar forests , leads to chamba.

While ascending from chamba there is a good view of distant mountains behind .

The six armed image of avalokiteshwara or boddhisattava is worshiped by both hindus and Buddhists alike in triloknath temple.

Today you arrive at a green valley, with  panoramic view of kailash peak. After visiting kartic temple at keeling, on the way duggi cave is big enough to accommodate 15 trekkers

Difficult trail. Kudi is grassy plateau with a stone hut.

5th day ;- alyas – khardu 3550mts ……15kms

Ascent to kugti pass 5040mts and descent to the other side for camping

3rd day ;- holi – nayagram or  navgam 2285mts …..19kms

Very easy walking along the bank of ravi leaving deot and garoh villages  behind, camp at nayagram. From here one trail goes to baijnath via  surai pass.

4th day ;- navgam – dharari 2440mts …..16kms

After crossing the river to right and passing through bajoli and sind villages, dharari is reached.

5th day ;- dharari – ratnapani 2500mts….. 16kms

At the last stage, cross the river to the left, for camping at ratnapani.

6th day ;- ratnapani – bara bhangal 2540mts ….16kms

At places trail is difficult. From bara bhangal either go to manali or to dharamsala.

 

 





TREKKING ROUTE NO. 24

CHAMBA – UDEYPUR / MANALI 4 DAYS

1st day ;- chamba – sillagharat 1830mts……20kms

Cross saho nallah, ascent and turn to left along hul nallah for sillagharat.

2nd day ;- sillagharat – bhangor 2450mts ….17kms

After zig zag crossing of the stream , the trail ascends to banatu ridge and then through forest to bhangor.

3rd day ;- bhangor – chanju 2135mts….15kms

Now the trail is to right after leaving bagai on the left and follow chanju nallah after lunek.

4th day ;-chanju – alyas 4300mts ….12kms

Tough day, camp at the base of the pass after passing through kalpra village.

5th day ;- alyas – tindi 2650mts ….20kms

Steep climb to the pass and after descending over moraine and grassy slope reach tindi.

 From here drive either to triloknath , udeypur or to manali via keylong.

CHAMBA – TIKRI – SILLAGHARAT – CHAMBA 6DAYS.

CHAMBA CIRCULAR TREK

It is a very good trek for natural scenery and passes through pangi valley.

 2nd day ;- kathel – tikri 1615 mts …16kms

Cross chanju nallah and ascent to tikri.

3rd day ;- tikri – chanju 2135mts ….20kms

Easy walking and then ascending charor nallah through bagai and bhula villages

4th day ;- chanju – bhangor 2450mts ……14kms

5th day ;- bhangor – sillagharat 1830mts ….12kms

6th day ;- sillagharat – chamba 996 mts…..20kms

TREKKING ROUTE NO , 26

CHAMBA 996MTS – DHARAMSALA 1250-1850MTS ….6DAYS

1st day;- chamba – chhatrari 1900mts …..4kms drive

2nd day ;- chhatrari – chalan 2800mts ….15kms

Easy walking along a stream , through green fields, villages and forests.

3rd day ;- chalan – chanderkup tal 3450mts ….10kms

Last stage of this trek is steep and rough. In summer ice berges floats on the lake

4th day ;- chanderkup tal – alyas 2800mts ….12kms

Steep and rough trail leads to the pass which remains covered with snow almost round the year, snow on steep slopes on both sides of the pass makes it possible for locals and  goddis to slide down. Sliding down on slope is called ghasutri in local dialect – hence the name of the pass.

5th day ;- alyas  - rewa village 2100mts ….14kms

6th day ;- rewa – dharamsala 1250 – 1550 mts …..12kms

MCLEODGANJ TO BHATED RIVER & BACK

Duration ;- 5 -6 hrs

Rating ;- ideal for families and kids, almost level walk

Distance covered both ways ;- 10kms

It end at the bank of river bhated, fed by snow , its water is cold and crystal clear. This place is surrounded by dense forest of cedar, oak and other varieties of trees. There is an opportunity for those interested in herbs  of lower Himalayan range. Carry pack lunch with a guide.

MCLEODGANJ  - BHAGSUNAG WATER FALL – DHARAMKOT-GALU TEMPLE

Starting  from mcleodganj. The first stage is bhagsunag village with an ancient shiva temple, another a kilometre will take you to a small but beautiful bhagsunag waterfall, to wards north –east of the temple. Now after a gradual ascent reach the highest point 2500mts of this trek and visit temple of galu mata. Enjoy surroundings, rest and back to mcleodganj.

From here another valley starts and at distance lies kareri village . before reaching to the guna temple, a fantastic view of ghasutri pass-way to chamba valley is seen. Guna mata temple is dedicated to goddess durga, this place is most suitable for  meditation.

From balgaon take another route via galu temple and  dharamkot village to reach mcleodganj.

MCLEODGANJ TO TRIUND & BACK

The trek starts from mcleodganj,  the first destination  galoo temple and then head towards the trail to triund from galoo temple the next 5kms are gradual compare  to beginning of the trek. The last stretch is very tiring which require skill to climb . triund is the  most beautiful meadow surrounded by mountains on its  north, kangra valley to the south. Forest rest house can be reserved through d.f.o. dharamsala. On the north east of triund, lies mt. indrahara 4320mts the peak called moonpeak. Return via another route comparatively rough and  tough, but it always depends on the weather and secondly you must be very good walker. The entire trek is covered with cedar, oak and rhododendron trees, there are varieties of Himalayan flowers of different kinds. On the half way is magic view café, a wonderful place for rest. The entire  trek is most charming , enjoyable and challenging.

TREKKING ITINERARIESA TREK TO SNOW – LINE


Mcleodganj to mcleodganj

Duration ;- 3 days

Departure; - every Friday

Day 1;- mcleodganj – triund 2900mts ……..9kms

It is a beautiful walk through mied forest of deodar, oak and rhododendron. Triund is situated on a ridge with a beautiful view of whole kangra valley on one  side and dhauladhar mountain range on the other. Overnight stay in a rest house or tents.

Day 2 ;- triund – laka got snow – line 3350mts – triund

The second day trek covers 4kms one way distance  along glacial moraines. Laka got situated at the snout of a small glacier is the base camp for the shephards. The small glacier is called snow – line. Lunch at snow – line and return to triund.

Day 3;- triund – mcleodganj

Take the same route on the way back or follow the grassy ridge which will lead to bhagsu nag temple, after crossing a small waterfall on the way. Mcleodganj is only 1.5kms from bhagsu nag by road.

 





TREK TO INDERHARA PASS 4300MTS

Duration ;- 4days

This is the most adventurours trek, which can be completed in four days.

Day 01 ;- mcleodganj – triund 2975mts ……9kms

The track goes through mied forest of oak, rhodendron and deodar trees. First 2kms is a steep ascent but there is a gradual ascent after galu devi temple. The last 1kms is again a steep ascent through the forest. Triund is a  flat meadow on top of a ridge. From here panoramic view of dhauladhar range on one side and kangra valley on the other is a memorable sight. Night stay in rest house / tents

Day 02;- triund – lahes cave 3700mts ………6kms

This is an acclimatization day. After a short ascent from triund traverse a  ridge to reach laka got – a temporary shepherd camp. Laka got is situated at the snout of a small glacier, which  is full of snow and ice in early summer, and the snow melts  away during the monsoon. From laka got it is a steep ascent for 2kms over a rocky ridge to reach lahes cave. Night stay in the cave or camp at laka got.

Day 03 ;- lahes cave – inderhara pass 4300mts – laka got

Start early in the morning, the weather gets bad  in the afternoon. In early summer april to may, the trail is full of snow and ice and require good equipment. During post mansoon September to November there is no snow or ice and there is narrow trail  going up to the pass. It takes about three hrs  to the pass and another three hrs to come down . from the pass entire pir panjal range of central Himalayas is a sight to behold. Back to laka  got for night stay.

Day 04;- laka got – mecleodganj ……13kms follow the same route on the way back or a different one from triund going over a grassy meadow and descend down to bhagsu nag and then to mcleodganj.

ROUND TREK IN DHAULADHARS

Day 01 ;- mcleodganj – kareri village 2200mts ……..14kms

The trek goes  through the pine forests and crosses several tribal villages on the way. Kareri is gaddi tribal village. Night stay in one of the village houses or in tents.

Day  02 ;- kareri – kareri lake 3500mts …….14kms

Trail goes through mixed forest of oak, rhododendron and pine. First 2kms is a level walk and then there is steep ascent along kareri nullah stream which has to be crossed over a  number of times over improvised wooden bridges. Night stay in tents at bank of kareri lake.

Day 03 ;- kareri lake – bagga 2500mts …..10kms

After a short ascent from the lake, is a steep descent through the forest  to bagga. Night stay in tents.

Day 04 ;- bagga – rawa village 2100mts …….10kms

The trail goes downhill through the forest . rawa village is situated on the bank of a small river. Night stay in the village.

Day 05;- rawa – guna devi temple 2600mts …..13kms

It is a steep ascent through the forest to guna devi temple, situated in the middle of the forest. Night stay in temple complex or in tents. This area is bird watchers paradise.

Day 06 ;- guna devi – triund 2975mts …..13 kms

After 2kms level walk there is a steep  ascent to triund – a flat meadow on the top of a ridge. From triund panoramic view of the peaks of dhauladhar on one side and the kangra valley on the other is awe- inspiring . night stay in forest rest house or tents.

Day 07 ;- triund – mcleodganj ………10kms

Note;- this round trek  can be done in 5 days, avoiding kareri lake.

KULLU VALLEY TREK


DHARAMSALA TO KULLU OVER SARI PASS 3800MTS

Duration; - 6 days

Starting point ;- bir 60kms from dharamsala

Best time ;- april to june and September to November

Rating ;- moderate

Day 01 ;- dharamsala – bir – billing 2900mts

Drive from dharamsala to bir 60kms and start the trek same day to billing 2900mts . it is about 8kms steep short cut trek from bir to billing. Night stay in tents.

Day 02;- billing – meyot village 2100mts …..15kms

After 9kms level walk through the mixed forest, the trail descends down to the bank of river uhi. After crossing the village camp on the bank of the river,

Day 03 ;- meyot –barot – loharadi 2400mts…..13kms

By pass barot, a small village with a trout fish farm and a water reservoir from where water is drawn through big pipes to jogindernagar to generate hydel power. Night stay in loharadi village either in tents or in a village house.

Day 04 ;- loharadi – lahes 3000mts………14kms

A steep ascent along a small stream through the forest takes to lahes, the base of sari pass.

Day 05;- lahes – sari pass – samalag 2900mts ………15kms

It is steep ascent from the base to the pass and takes about three to four hrs upto the pass and another three hrs to go down to the camping site.

Day 06 ;- samalag – shalang – kullu

After crossing small villages of kullu valley for 12kms level walk will take to shalang, the road head. From shalang drive to kullu town 12kms

PILGRIMAGE TREK TO HOLY LAKES

 Kareri – dal lake – manimahesh lake

Duration ;- 10 days

Maimum elevation ;- 4200mts

Starting point ;- mcleodganj

Day 01 ;- mcleodganj – kareri village 1900mts …..13kms

The first 6kms of the trek passes through a small lake, Tibetan children village and satobary village. From satobary village a wide trail descends to ghera through thick  jungle then  cross gaj river and kareri stream. From ghera is a  steady climb to kareri village. Night stay in forest rest house or tents.

Day 02;- kareri village – kareri lake 3200mts ……12kms

Trek goes along kareri nullah stream . it is 3 to 4 hrs to kareri lake. The lake is situated at the base of minkiani pass. Kareri lake has beautiful high altitude meadows and big pastureland.

Day 03;- kareri lake – minkiani pass – minkiani got 3500mts ….9kms

4 to 5 hrs steep  asent takes to the top of the pass, in early summer one has to walk over snow and ice and needs good technical skill. After the monsoon there is no snow and the trail is visible. The weather  is unpredictable here. From the pass the trail descends down to the minkiani got through big boulders, in early summer months these boulders remain covered by deep snow. The track terminates at minkiani got where few rock caves and a beautiful camping ground will take care of night stay.

Day 04 ;- minkiani got – lam dal lake 3900mts – minkiani got…..10kms

Lam dal the biggest lake in dhauladhar range is considered as the abode of shiva and is sacred. On the way to lam dal is kali kund , a small lake shaped like a well and syrrounded by rising hills.

Day 05 ;- minkiani got – drakund 1800mts ……..15kms

From lam dal the trek descends down the valley along lam dal stream. Night stay at drakund rest house surrounded by thick apple orchards.

 Day 06 ;-drakund – dunali …..9kms – bharmour 2195mts ….40kms

It takes about two hrs to reach dunali on the main chamba – bharmour road. The villages are scattered but linked with each other,.

Day 07 ;- rest day in bharmour 2195 mts.

Located at the confluence of ravi river and lam dal stream. Dunali to bharmour 40kms . night stay in a guest house in bharmour . visit ancient chaurasi temples,re –supply for the trek

Day 08 ;- bharmour – hadsar – dhancho 2440mts

Bharmour to hadsar is 17kms motorable . hadsar to dhancho is about 8kms , steep ascent. Dhancho is the base camp for the trekkers enroute manimahesh lake. Gauri nullah stream forms a huge waterfalls at  dhancho. Night stay in tents.

Day 09 ;- dhancho – manimahesh lake 4115mts – dhancho …..15kms

From dhancho, a big trail steep up – 5kms to gauri kund is gradual ascent for 2.5 kms to manimahesh lake. Manimahesh is a small glacial lake situated at base of mt. kailash chamba kailash is the highest lake in dhauladhar and pir panjal ranges. Thousands of people go on pilgrimage to this lake every year in august. Lunch at the lake and back to dhancho for night stay.

Day 10;- dhancho – bharmour

Night stay in the guest house from bharmour bus / jeep are available for chamba, dharamsala

TREK TO BHARMOUR OVER INDERHARA PASS

Duration of trek ;- 6days

Maximum elevation ;- 4300mts

Starting point ;- mecleodganj

Day 01 ;- mcleodganj – triund 2975mts …..9kms

Trek to triund, a little table- land is 9kms pleasant walk through deodar and rhododendron forests. Triund offers entire view of kangra valley. It is a wonder ful camping ground. One can also book forest rest house for over nighy stay.

Day 02 ;- triund – lehs cave 3750mts …..6kms

This is a short walk of 6kms  through deodar and oak forests. After 4kms reach laka got, which is situated at the snout of a small glacier. This glacier marks the snow – line. After crossing the glacier go over a steep rocky ridge for 2kms and reach lehs cave. The big cave is used for over night stay.

Day 03;- lehs cave – inderhara pass 4300mts – chata 3700mts ……11kms

The trek to pass goes over soft in early summer and rocky faces in monsoons. The trek unto pass is a steep climb. Fogy weather with  zero visibility obstructs the movement of climbers and on such occasions it is advisable to stay back and wait for the weather to get clear. The trek during april and may is tougher due to presence of hard ice. On reaching the top of the pass one can see the pir panjal ranges very clearly. The other side of the pass remains snow covered till the middle of july. The trek descends down and reaches chata parao, beautiful green pasture and is most ideal for camping

Day 04 ;- chata parao – kwarsi 2730mts ….14kms

The stretch up to chata nullah stream is 6kms descent and after crossing the stream, walk over a long pasture land before entering into a thick forest of  pine tress. Kwarsi is a small tribal village surrounded by thicky wooded pine trees. Night stay in the village and enjoy the hospitality of the villagers.

 Day 05 ;- kwarsi – siur …..18kms

From kwarsi the trail goes through dense forest of pine trees. At some places the trail is cut through huge rocks and is very narrow.  After crossing hilling  and lamu villages on the way, it takes around three hrs to reach the road head and after walking 2kms on the road cross the ravi river to enter in to siur village. Night stay in tents close to the village.

Day 06 ;- siur – bharmour ……9kms

Passing through several tribal villages reach bharmaur in about three hrs bharmour is a beautiful villages with a few guest houses and is well connected by road to chamba town. It is worth staying one night in bharmour and visit ancient chaurasi temples eighty four temples. From bharmour you can do another three days trek to manimahesh lake situated at the base of mount kailash or come back to dharamsala passing through chamba.
